Zoom Life Saver or Disaster

2 min read

With all the changes we have had to make over the last several months most of us have had to rely on Zoom or some other product similar to that to keep working. Zoom had exponential growth in users almost overnight and had some really interesting growing pains. One of which is hackers exploiting some of its vulnerabilities. We had a new update almost every single day and now they are mostly down to about once a week. It is a great platform to use for teaching and the monthly cost to have more than three people and longer than 45 minutes is well worth the fee. And, it is tax-deductible after all.

Overall I believe it is a very nice teaching tool. Having the ability to share your screen with your clients or students is such a nice feature. They too can share what they are seeing without you having to sign into their computer system. Earlier in the year, I gave my first lecture on book marketing to the local writers’ group in Gainesville, Florida over Zoom. During those early trial periods all the way back on May 3rd it was a bit of a challenge as I had to mute everyone during my talk and then unmute for the Q&A. Most of the attendees haven’t had any experience with the forum and kept forgetting to mute their microphones as they munched on snacks, yelled at their dog more moved around trying to get more comfortable.

From that experience, a couple of my clients and I started a weekly writers critique group that includes three working on four self-published writers, two aspiring self-publish writers, and one voice-over actress. The VO lady is doing the voice-overs for each of our published books. Her husband wants to become a SciFi/Fantasy writer so he joins us online when he isn’t working. We use Zoom because of its ease of use, a comparable dashboard to most of the other programs we regularly use, and has more privacy now with encrypted links and password requirements. If you haven’t had a chance to try it out we of the “Lively Ladies Literary” Group hope you will try it out.
