Promotion Is Hard

3 min read

Promotion is hard for all of us but especially for us introverted authors who only want to concentrate on creating more engaging stories for our readers. There is nothing like handing off the finished manuscript to your editor (if you can afford one or barter services with another writer); publisher (if you are lucky enough to have one); perhaps to the person who will format it properly so that it can be self-published; finally, if you don’t have any of those resources but yourself you definitely feel good about uploading your story to whichever platform you use to self publish. I know, terribly long sentence, just to say that once you have completed your baby and it has published you want to take a week off and then get back to writing.

Sadly, this is so not what you can do these days. Even with a publishing house doing most of the work getting the book ready to publish, printing off the copies, arranging for bookstores to buy it but you still have to put yourself out there and sell your story. I don’t know how many times I have read this, heard it and said it myself, Writing is a business and should be treated as such. You should be learning new ways to promote your books before they are published, during the editing and publishing process and afterward. There are basic steps that you should be doing before during and after every single book launch.

I gave a presentation to the Writers Alliance of Gainesville on Zoom during their May 3, 2020 meeting. The first one they had had I might add and even with me hosting the event it didn’t go as well as I had hoped. But it didn’t go as bad as it could have either. I was asked several questions that I tried to answer but through technical difficulties, I’m afraid I wasn’t able to answer them all. I did, however, upload the presentation to my YouTube Channel for all the members to view who didn’t get a chance to. But I will be making it private as of this weekend.

Instead, I wrote a booklet that I hope you will buy and share. The eBook version is first being offered on Smashwords at $2.99. I have uploaded it to Google Play Books but they require a 12 day waiting period before publishing new authors and I just uploaded it to Amazon for paperback ($9.99) and Kindle version also for $2.99 once it passes inspection. The price of the booklet will go up to $4.99 in eBook version on July 1, 2020. It is filled with the 10 ways to market your book for Free and I have included some other tidbits of information that writers might find useful. It is not meant to be an extensive book marketing how-to.
