Discovering an Unexpected Passion

Linda Hansen, best known for her watercolor paintings, never imagined herself as an author. Her venture into writing began serendipitously with “The Story of Otto the Otter, A Big Surprise.” Inspired by real-life encounters with an otter at a pond near her home, the story came to life. Hansen emphasizes the importance of letting readers discover the big surprise for themselves by diving into the book.

Hansen’s creative path continued with the tale of a lost dog, a personal story that unfolded right in her neighborhood. This second book solidified her newfound identity as an author, offering a glimpse into stories that resonate deeply with her life experiences.

Interview Questions The Author Added For Our Readers

How long have you been writing or when did you start?
I started to write two and a half , almost three years ago, by accident. It is not something I ever thought of doing before and only did this after a neighbor nagged me to do.

What advice would you give to a writer working on his/her first book?
I had someone tell me that know how you are going to market your book before you write it. The advice was a little late for me as my book was at the offset printer I use and I was waiting for delivery. But, there is no sense in writing a book if you don’t have a marketing plan.

How do you develop your plot and characters?
I have written/illustrated two children’s picture books. They are both true stories. The plot existed and I wrote the story to fit within the framework of a book for children.

When did you first call yourself a writer?
The magical day when I saw my book, for the first time, in a Barnes & Noble.

How many books have you written, and which is your favorite?
I have written/illustrated two books. My favorite is the first, Otto the Otter, A Big Surprise. I like the story and I am particularly proud of the watercolor paintings I did for the book. I love watching people look at the book prior to purchasing it.

What books have you read more than once in your life?
In this concerning time of books being banned, it makes me think we are entering the time of Fahrenheit 451. I would be my two favorite books, that I have read and read and read… The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran and The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery.
