Patricia D’Arcy Laughlin’s path to becoming an author wound through six continents before it ever touched a keyboard. Born in Trinidad and educated across the UK and the US, Patricia spent decades traveling extensively with her husband, often staying a month or longer in countries like India, Africa, and Australia rather than rushing through tourist stops.
It was on those trips, particularly while visiting ancient ruins, that she encountered something that would reshape her writing: evidence of goddess worship predating the patriarchal religious traditions she’d grown up with. “It’s been hidden from us for a long time,” she said in our conversation. That discovery became a guiding thread in her contemporary romance series, The Sacrifices and Kingdoms Series, which follows a Trinidadian-American protagonist navigating love and identity across cultures.
Patricia didn’t come to writing through a traditional path, either. She spent years running a luxury home development business with her husband and didn’t own a computer until adulthood, when a computer expert helped her select her first Dell at Best Buy. Once she started writing, she found her own rhythm: ideas often arrive in the middle of the night, sending her straight to the keyboard rather than to a fixed daily schedule.
Rather than pursue a traditional publishing deal, Patricia chose independent publishing, working with a “book shepherd” to navigate the parts of the process that required outside expertise. She credits strong reader reviews, many posted to Amazon and shared on her website, with reaffirming that her stories are reaching the people she hopes to reach.
Her literary influences include Barbara Taylor Bradford and Diana Gabaldon, both known for strong, historically grounded female characters, an influence clearly present in her own writing. Asked who she’d invite to a dream dinner party, Patricia named Mahatma Gandhi, author James Michener, and Bradford herself, three figures whose work and worldview she says shaped her own.
