Melissa Rooney: Where Science Meets Storytelling in Picture Books

When it comes to blending science with the power of story, few do it as seamlessly as Melissa Rooney, freelance editor, writer, and picture book author based in Durham County, North Carolina. Her career is a testament to the belief that picture books are not “just for children,” but powerful tools for education, community, and environmental awareness.

Melissa’s latest release, Larry the Log Perch, was commissioned by the Kiwanis Club of Roanoke, Virginia. At first glance, the story is about an endangered species of fish that flips rocks to find food. But at its heart, it’s also a classroom resource—complete with scientific terminology, a glossary, and environmental lessons suitable for elementary through high school readers. “It can be used for environmental science curricula,” Melissa explains, noting that making science accessible is her greatest point of pride

Her earlier books carry similar educational depth. Eddie the Electron, first published by Amberjack Publishing, introduces children to the invisible world of atoms, electrons, and electricity. The Fate of the Frog, published with Mascot Books, addresses pressing environmental issues. And her self-published I Chalk celebrates the creative joy of sidewalk art. Across her catalog, Melissa proves that picture books can entertain while also tackling complex themes.

A “Fro Word” Approach to Publishing

Melissa has traveled every road in publishing: traditional, hybrid, and indie. Larry the Log Perch became the flagship title for a new house, Froward Press—a name she proudly emphasizes as “fro-word,” meaning to take a different path. It’s a fitting metaphor for her own journey, marked by persistence and experimentation.

She is also open about the struggles that come with rejection, from agents and publishers alike. “Rejections can be disheartening,” she admits, “but they’re part of the process.” Melissa leans on fellow authors for encouragement and reminds herself that publishing isn’t the only measure of success—sharing stories, reviews, and articles is equally valuable

Creativity Beyond Books

In addition to authoring, Melissa writes for newspapers, contributes children’s book reviews to the New York Journal of Books, and covers performances for the Triangle Theater Review. She also teaches creative writing residencies for elementary students, helping them compile anthologies of their work.

Her nonprofit work with Urban Sustainability Solutions takes her passion for the environment into the community, where she helps train and employ students and teachers in stormwater management projects. It’s a hands-on extension of the lessons she weaves into her books.

Looking Ahead

Melissa’s next project, Summer Dreaming, explores the unique life cycle of cankerworms—an unusual insect in which only the males develop wings. The book is layered with metaphor, touching on themes of gender norms and identity. She and illustrator Stacy Fabre are even considering publishing under a joint pseudonym, “Melissa Stacy,” to reflect their creative partnership.

As the publishing industry evolves, Melissa embraces new tools, including social media and even artificial intelligence, while remaining rooted in her mission: to inspire curiosity, environmental awareness, and a love of science through stories.

For readers, parents, and educators alike, Melissa Rooney’s books offer more than just beautiful illustrations and engaging narratives—they provide a bridge between imagination and the natural world, reminding us that picture books are truly for everyone.
