Did you know that the very first female private detective was hired by the Pinkerton Detective Agency in Chicago, Illinois? It is true and she trained a whole department of female detectives for the agency who worked all over and throughout the Civil War.

I am trying to read more historical mystery fiction and I came across this YA book about the first women detective (real life person) who worked for the Pinkerton Agency. Allan Pinkerton (the original and founder of the detective agency) hired Miss Kate Warne who not only solved just as many cases as the men but is credited with saving Abraham Lincoln’s life during his first assassination attempt. Had she lived she may have even been able to save him from Booth. It was a very nice read and kept me interesting all the way to the end.

This is a well-written fiction story for middle school children. I enjoyed it very much and it has given me some great ideas for my own historical fiction book set in the same town, Chicago, with references to Kate Warne and the Pinkerton agency in the background. Grab yourself a copy it was a nice read.
